DR. JAMES F. DOWNES
PROFESSOR & AWARD WINNING TEACHER
My name is James. I will be an Assistant Professor (Professorial Track) in Comparative Politics & International Relations at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) from August 2022.
I am also a Senior Research Fellow at CARR and a Research Fellow at both the Global Europe Centre (University of Kent/Brussels School of International Studies) and at the Center for Research & Social Progress in Italy.
I research comparative party politics and political behavior (populism and right-wing party competition on immigration) in contemporary European politics, primarily through the use of expert surveys, public opinion surveys, Manifesto Data, and case study analysis.
I provide regular media commentary on issues that relate to European & EU Politics
(EU Politics, Populism, Brexit & Comparative Asian Politics).
Teaching In CUHK
I am a passionate believer in research informing teaching. I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching, from the University of Kent (UK) and a Professional Certificate of “Excellence” in Teaching at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (SAR, China).
